This painting embodies the theme of beauty beyond the crown in the story of Esther, as her true beauty was her sacrifice of marrying the king. In doing so, she was apt to be instrumental in saving her people from genocide. Sometimes life directs us into situations where we must give up something that we’ve always assumed we’d have the right to enjoy. The lapse between this discovery and when we actually are able to internally catch up is a struggle so turbulent I fear that cannot be justified with simple description. Therefore, as most artists, I ventured to scrape the surface of Esther’s deed with a painting. The crown wraps itself around the flower like a cage, yet at the same time it grants rare voice to one ready to die for those many lives she ended up helping spare.
